Meet The Founder
Hi, I’m Sydney.
M.A., Teachers College, Columbia University
10+ Years in Education
NYC Educator + Special Educator
Teaching has been the throughline of my life for more than a decade.
From serving as an education volunteer with the Peace Corps in South Africa to earning my Master’s in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and teaching in New York City schools, I’ve built my career around one question:
What does this child need in order to thrive?
As a classroom teacher, special educator, and tutor, I’ve worked with students across ages,
abilities, subjects, and learning profiles. Again and again, I’ve seen what becomes possible when
a child receives the right combination of expert instruction, meaningful challenge,
encouragement, and individual attention.
That’s the work I love—and why I created Light Tutoring Co.
Why I Founded Light Tutoring Co.
The classroom taught me something I have never forgotten: “children thrive when they are deeply known.”
One-to-one tutoring creates the time and space to understand not just what a student is struggling with, but why—and then build instruction around exactly what that child needs next.
I founded Light because I believe tutoring can be much more than homework help.
It can close gaps. Build skills. Restore confidence. Create challenge. Spark curiosity. And help a child discover:
I can do hard things. I know how to learn.
That’s what I want every Light student to experience
Light Tutoring Co.’s Approach
Individualized by design. Rigours in Practice. Joyful at heart
No two students learn exactly the same way. That’s why Light begins with the learner—not a predetermined program.
We begin with strengths, needs, interests, confidence, and goals so instruction is built around the whole child.
01 | Know the Learner
Assessment and observation help us identify exactly what a student needs next—and adjust instruction as they grow.
02 | Teach with Precision
Students are challenged deeply while receiving the modeling, structure, feedback, and encouragement they need to succeed
03 | High Expectations
Rigorous learning can also be creative, engaging, and fun. We believe students do their best work when challenge and joy exist together
Students shine brightest when they are challenged, supported, and truly known.
04 | Excellence + Joy
What Your Child Can Expect from Light
TO BE KNOWN
Not as a score or a set of deficits, but as a whole person.
TO BE CHALLENGED
With meaningful work that stretches their thinking.
TO BE SUPPORTED
With the tools, instruction, feedback, and encouragement they need to succeed.
TO HAVE A VOICE
And build the confidence that comes from knowing, I can do this.
TO EXPERIENCE PROGRESS
And build the confidence that comes from knowing, I can do this.
TO DISCOVER JOY
Because learning should leave room for curiosity, creativity, and connection
The Light Promise
We will know your child.
We will challenge them thoughtfully, support them intentionally, celebrate their growth, and continually adjust our teaching to what they need.
We will never measure success only by tonight’s assignment or next week’s test.
Our goal is a stronger, more confident, more independent learner—one who knows how to shine long after a tutoring session ends.
Ready to See What’s Possible?
Finding the right support starts with understanding your child.
Let’s talk about where they are now, where you’d love to see them grow, and whether Light might be the right partner to help them get there
